Last week, São Paulo’s City Council approved Bill 0691/2022, which prohibits horse racing in the city. The bill, authored by councilor Xexéu Tripoli, aims to align with Brazil’s gambling ban. Mayor Ricardo Nunes sanctioned it, giving establishments 180 days to comply before fines are imposed.
The Jockey Club of São Paulo expressed strong opposition, criticizing the bill’s lack of understanding of horse racing and suggesting it might lead to the expropriation of their land. They plan to pursue legal action to protect their interests and filed a writ of mandamus against the mayor and City Council president. The City Hall intends to convert the Cidade Jardim Hippodrome into a municipal park as part of the new Master Plan.
