The Senate will exclusively deliberate on Bill (PL) 2,234/2022, which authorizes the operation of casinos, bingos, and other games, on June 19. This bill, first presented in 1991, allows the establishment of casinos in tourist centers and integrated leisure complexes, including high-end hotels and cultural event spaces.

Senator Davi Alcolumbre announced the vote after discussions among senators. While some senators support the bill for potential economic benefits, others express concerns about possible negative consequences, such as money laundering and gambling addiction.

Senator Irajá, the bill’s rapporteur, accepted five amendments to the project but emphasized the need for further analysis. The postponement aims to provide time for a detailed review of the 38 amendments submitted. Senators Eduardo Braga and Rogério Carvalho advocate for thorough scrutiny to ensure a well-informed decision.

Opponents like Senator Eduardo Girão argue that Brazil lacks adequate control mechanisms to manage potential issues like gambling addiction and crime. Senator Sérgio Moro raised concerns about the impact of gambling advertising on addiction.

The outcome of this vote could significantly influence Brazil’s approach to gambling regulation, balancing economic opportunities against social risks.
